Kitchener Waterloo’s Best Competitive K1 and Muay Thai Kickboxing Club
If you have attained a solid foundation in the basics and fundamentals in our recreational kickboxing program or have trained extensively in other martial arts then joining competitive team training classes could be the next step for you.
Double Dragon offers Kitchener Waterloo’s best K1 and Muay Thai Kickboxing classes, instruction and coaching for members who want to train hard or compete as an amateur or professional in national and international Kickboxing, K1, Muay Thai, Sanshou, Mixed Martial Arts and Boxing events. We provide world class instruction and coaching for aspiring fighters who are self-motivated, exhibit exemplary skills and possess the willingness to learn and train on a regular basis at demanding pace.
Our competitive Kickboxing classes focus heavily on strength and conditioning as well as the basic kickboxing fundamentals and techniques required to be a successful fighter. In class, team members start with a variety of warm up exercises, before learning and practising strikes and combinations. Strikes and combinations are typically practised with partners utilizing equipment such as focus mitts or thai pads or on heavy, speed or double end bags. Classes typically end with a variety of high energy conditioning drills and team members are expected to run and exercise regularly on their off days to help increase strength and cardiovascular endurance.
At Double Dragon we teach both K1 and Muay Thai style Kickboxing as we believe by utilizing a 45 degree stance typically used in Dutch style K1 Kickboxing allows for more effective punching, kicking and defense while switching to a more traditional square stance when in close and utilizing clinching, knees and elbow strikes or avoiding sweeps predominantly used in Muay Thai makes for better fighters.
Our competitive team members who want to compete start by learning how to spar. Sparring starts when trainers decide if and when you are ready. Competitive team members begin by sparring with trainers first. Our competitive trainers and coaches are experienced in the ring and able to work with team members to develop the skills and confidence to feel comfortable while learning to fight and defend. Once our competitive trainers and coaches are confident, team members skills and cardio conditioning are ready, they will be given the opportunity to begin sparring with other team members at the same skill level. All sparring is monitored by experienced trainers to ensure safety and proper technique and must only be done with proper equipment such as 16 oz boxing gloves, hand wraps, mouth guard, head gear, shin guards and a groin protector.
A typical recreational kickboxing class starts with a 10 minute cardio warm up followed by 10 minutes of stretching, sparring and 30-45 minutes of technical instruction and practice before finishing with 10 minutes of conditioning exercises.
